The 2022 edition of Young International Creation focuses on artistic production in Europe, inviting five European curators to propose artists alongside those who graduated from art schools in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and were selected by a jury composed of representatives of the institutions co-organising the event (La Biennale de Lyon, the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon, the Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes, and macLYON). Crossing territories, bringing networks together, and opening up to different audiences, this institutional complementarity is exceptional both in France and internationally, offering young artists, whose work is still relatively little known, unprecedented visibility.

Conceived in 2002 by macLYON and the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon, and later joined by the Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes, the event has been part of the Lyon Biennale since 2019. After establishing connections with extra-European art scenes (Shanghai, Cape Town, Singapore, Beijing, Havana, etc.), it now focuses on establishing or strengthening European networks in order to foster exchanges with active artistic scenes in neighbouring countries.
